This French-speaking city of around 12 000 inhabitants (called the Villarois) forming a multicultural mix of many nationalities is in the district of Sarine, being part of a bilingual canton of Fribourg. The city is integrated into the Fribourg agglomeration with its capital being only 4 km away. Therefore, the everyday life of both municipalities is closely related even though Villars-sur-Glâne (named after the river, la Glâne) has its own industrial zone being home to many big companies. Many Villarois work in Fribourg and the city is well served by a network of city and inter-city buses of the company called Transports Publics Fribourgeois. It is located on the railway crossing of lanes Lausanne - Fribourg – Berne. The political capital of the Swiss Confederation can be reached by train in less than 22 minutes and great cities like Geneva, Zürich and Basel (with its international airport) in less than 90 minutes. The highway A12 connecting Vevey and Bern is also easily accessible. As a matter of fact, one may comfortably live in Villars-sur Glâne and work in a completely different city. You should not miss the local ruins and the Moncor mound – a witness to the city's long and turbulent past. Important landmarks close-by include above all the old bridge and the chapel of Saint Apolline.
