A charming city on the shore of Lake Geneva, with seats of UEFA and Tupperware

Nyon is a municipality in the canton of Vaud and the capital of the district of Nyon, with a population of 21,300. Most of the residents of the town and canton speak French. Nyon lies on the shores of Lake Geneva, some 40 km away from Lausanne, and is the seat of several international organisations: the UEFA, ECA (European Club Association) and UNI Global Union (global union federation). It is also famous for being the headquarters of a renowned insurance company, Generali Switzerland, Tupperware Switzerland, Beckman Coulter Switzerland and the Changins Engineering School, which trains specialists in wine-growing, oenology and fruit farming. Nyon has many historical sites of national importance, such as Colonia Iulia Equestris, the Roman Museum, the Reformed Church of Notre Dame, the Manoir (manor house), as well as the castle with a Museum of History and Museum of the History of Porcelain. In fact, between 1781 and 1813 the city had a famous porcelain factory.

Real estate: living in Nyon

Nyon is a town in the canton of Vaud with rich history, favourable location on the shores of Lake Geneva and rich cultural and sporting life. All this makes it irresistibly charming. Hergé, the author of the Tintin comic books, succumbed to its charm already in 1956, making the town a setting for “The Calculus Affair”. In July, Nyon attracts thousands of spectators flocking to see the Paléo Festival, an open-air music festival featuring international stars. Another important event in the town is the August triathlon. When the first snow falls, the people of Nyon go skiing in the neighbouring resorts of La Dôle and St-Cergue or to somewhat more distant ski stations of Crans-Montana and Gstaad. Those less sporty stroll along the magnificent shores of Lake Geneva and enjoy the panoramic view of the nearby Alpine peaks. The costs of living in Nyon are high, which is also reflected by tendencies on the property market. Therefore, finding a place to stay here is not an easy thing to do. Those who love cooking will be charmed by fish freshly caught from Lake Geneva, which can be bought in a fishing village, a five-minute walk from the town’s centre. The slopes surrounding the town are covered with 270 hectares of Nyon appellation vineyards, producing renowned white wines.
