With its 19 000 inhabitants, called also the « Onésiens », Onex (remember not to pronounce the « x » in the end) is a municipality located in the Geneva agglomeration, neighboring the Vernier and Lancy and located only 5 km away from Geneva city center. It is a few minutes ride from Geneva. This municipality has the benefit of being near to the metropole served by the line 14 as well as many public buses. The direct access to the highway will allow you to reach France and the Geneva international airport in only 15 minutes. Onex is divided in two parts called: the Cité-Nouvelle, a rather popular city part with two-thirds of the overall population and the Onex-Village with Pré-Longet et Belle-Cour which attracts its most affluent part. The Cantonal population office is seated here as well as the seat of Implenia, a big construction company. Onex can boast of the park Evaux - one of the biggest urban parks in the whole Switzerland dedicated to sports, leisure and nature.
The life of Onésiens is punctuated by three nice local markets which take place each Wednesday and Saturday in the market square (Avenue des Grandes-Communes) and on Thursdays in Onex-village. Sunday world market is organized in the place des Deux-Églises. The first Sunday of May, the city celebrates the Feuillu, a popular folk festival of the canton of Geneva which honors the return of spring. Onex is a city of sports with numerous facilities offering tennis, horse riding, swimming, football, basketball, volleyball, rugby, etc. In addition to its close location to Geneva lake, the banks of Rhône and Arve, Onex has preserved very nice green areas. The park called Brot with its pond and forest, the park of Mairie with its communal vineyards reminding the excellent wines produced in this region as well as park called Evaux, close to Rhône, with nearly 155 hectares managed by the municipalities of Lancy, Bernex, Confignon and the Geneva city. Finding a place to live in Onex is not an easy task. Like in all other cities around Geneva, many housing projects are currently under construction or under consideration in order to improve the market where the demand is high and the offer rather scarce. The property prices, especially for apartments, are high.
